NOT ONLY THE DOGS (BOOKS AS WELL)
by Michael Rosser

The French Bulldog numbers explosion is reflected in current Frenchie publishing.

Let’s review French Bulldog book numbers (in the English language) since the last world war.  (Include children’s books, well-regarded pamphlets and booklets, but exclude magazines and so on.)

From 1945 it took nearly forty years for a total of four French Bulldog publications to emerge.  Contrast 2008 and 2009.  Each year four frenchie books were published.

The accelerating pattern is shown in this little chart:

    1945 to 1985      4 books in 40 years
    1986 to 1995      6      in 10 years
    1996 to 2000      6      in   5 years
    2001 to 2005      10    in   5 years
    2006 to 2007      4      in   2 years
    2008                   4      in   1 year
    2009                   4      in   1 year
        (or 12 in the 4 years 2006 to 2009)

The reviews below will give you an idea of the variety of published works of our favorite breed.

Portrait of America’s French Bulldogs
Contemporary Pedigrees That Shaped The Breed in the United States

Extraordinary artwork and pedigree info from Linda Maingot, with contributions from Juanita Imperiale writing about the use of genetic manipulation to shape the breed,  and grooming advice from DaNee' Jensen. There are 55 full page color portraits by Linda Maingot of 63 champions, and opposite each painting is a four generation pedigree prefaced by succinct but interesting notes.

French Bulldogs have special needs and are not for everyone.  Living with them is not the same as looking at them and admiring them.  See whether this is the breed for you.
